Glenmorangie Milsean is the latest release from our award-winning Private Edition range. It is a strikingly different single malt whisky which is sweet, spicy and spectacular, brimming with intense candied fruit flavours.
Its remarkable copper beech colour is the result of its aging in very special casks which were created just for this whisky expression. The nose is sugar cane and sherbet, coconut, ripe melon and citrus too. There's an almost thick buttery texture to it with hints of tingling spices and chilli, then luscious honeyed flavours followed by a mix of tart plummy fruit, candied orange peel, cherries, angelica and then yet more fruits: peaches, nectarines, plums and melon. The finish is considerable: long lasting and spicy, always with that complex sweetness in the background, suggestions of ginger, brown sugar, sweet tobacco and cake mix.
To produce these flavours in a single malt whisky is no easy task. But Dr Bill Lumsden, our always inspired whisky creator, was firmly set on enhancing the sweeter notes in Glenmorangie Original, really bringing out the vanilla, the almond and the butterscotch. Inspired by traditional Scottish sweetshops (those old-fashioned confectioners you still occasionally find, the ones stocked with large jars of 'Midget Gems' and 'Soor Plooms' and 'Humbugs'), Dr Bill began to dream of taking the sweetest elements of a whisky's profile to a whole new level.
A Remarkable Process
All this was many years ago when Dr Bill decided on the type of wine casks he needed and placed a very specific order. He bought former Portuguese red wine casks and had them shipped to Scotland where they were re-toasted. A unique cask preparation that turns out to have been ingenious. Those casks, charred with live flame after their time with a bold and powerful red wine, deliver much sweetness, piquancy too, the re-toasting causing the sugars to deepen into the wood. In this way Glenmorangie Milsean builds on our unequalled experience in cask selection. A whisky which is luscious and full, sumptuous and more-ish, it demonstrates a new dimension in what is possible with extra-maturation.
Optimum Flavour Extraction
"When I filled these amazing casks with Glenmorangie whisky the power and sweet flavours of dark tarry fruits quickly began emerging in the whisky. I realised we were dealing with a liquid of unique character and fabulous taste. But we had to carefully control the wood finish. We couldn't go too sweet... In the end our whisky would still have to be, recognisably, a single malt from the Scottish Highlands," Dr Bill explains.
"We were blown away by the early tastings. We were creating something incredible. But it had to be watched carefully while seeking the optimum flavourings. I was anxious not to go over the top, not to spoil it. Changes in it were meticulously measured until we were convinced we'd reached peak flavour, liquid precision and perfection!
"It was only then that we set about naming the whisky. We settled, quite naturally, on Glenmorangie Milsean, Scots Gaelic for sweet things." (It's pronounced meel-shawn.)
"I'm always thinking of new ways and means," says Dr Bill. "We're looking for great leaps and small steps, progress in whatever way we find it. There's no doubt that Glenmorangie Milsean is truly innovative, sure to fascinate aficionados and, we believe, delight all who sample it."
